– To all the young and young at heart readers of the Daily Dog, we are pleased to advise there are two Hairy Maclary extravaganzas happening in Australia over the next few months. (For everyone who doesn’t know who Hairy Maclary is, we’ll get to you shortly :))

The Rockhampton, Art Gallery in Queensland is currently holding an exhibition of 50 original drawings by the creator of Hairy Maclary, Mrs Lynley Dodd. Mrs Dodd travelled to Rockhampton recently as part of the launch of the exhibition, and gave some wonderful insights into the creation of the little ruffian and his friends many years ago.

The exhibition travels on to Cairns Regional Gallery (QLD), Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (VIC) and the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney next year, after being hosted in Rockhampton between November 30, 2013 and February 02, 2014.

As well as featuring in a travelling art exhibition, Hairy Maclary is also the star of his very own stage show! “Hairy Maclary and Friends” will be performing at the Sydney Opera House (no-less!) between the dates of December 14, 2013 and January 13, 2014. This interactive stage show features all the main characters from the children’s book series, as well as lots of music, singing and the re-telling of several of the Hairy Maclary stories.

Now back to those who don’t know who Hairy Maclary is; he is definitely a “bitsa”, who happens to live at Donaldson’s Dairy. Accompanied by rhyming verse and his canine friends, he engages in lots of adventures around his little village in England. In this day and age of video games, electronic gadgets and kids growing up all too fast, the whimsical tales of Master Hairy have been encouraging children to sit down and read for so many years that over 5 million copies of Mrs Dodd’s tales have been sold. Our own children (and their parents!) are big fans of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy, so we’d like to encourage anyone who is able to attend one of the events mentioned above to do so…and you might even like to take your children with you too! 😉
