Cracker – Australian Puppy Scams Hall of Shame August 2015 Update

Cracker .com.au is loaded with fake puppy ads – beware!

– In the August 2015 edition of the Australian Puppy Scams Hall of Shame, we expose Cracker .com.au, a site that in terms of its puppy classifieds is completely and utterly taken over by scammers.

As you’ll see from the attached video, moderation of the site is non-existent. The site pretends to be Australian, but is really run out of the Netherlands. To make customers feel as if the site is moderated, the owners simply include a bland disclaimer and contact email address for scam reporting purposes.

If you were to report one of the ads to the site owners however, there is almost zero chance you will receive anything other than an automated reply, which is true to form for such sites.

Of course, as we note in the video, if the site owners removed every puppy scam on the site, there would simply be no ads running at all.

Sites like Cracker use an authentic, “aussie sounding” name to try and draw people in from their target market – in this case unsuspecting Australian dog lovers. People think, “oh – with a name like Cracker, they must be Australian,”, when as we have shown, nothing could be further from the truth. Even if they were truly Australian, all the site owners are about is extracting revenue from Google. They do this by attracting as large an audience as possible and strategically placing ads from Google’s “Adsense” program on their pages, knowing that a certain percentage of site visitors will click on those ads and thus generate revenue for them.

So in summary, it’s all about the dollars, folks. The site owners couldn’t care less if you got ripped off every day of the week by the scumbags who post their fake ads on the site. All they care about is making as much money as possible from Google – and you as the consumer can go jump in the lake.

The only way to make such sites clean up their game from a consumer perspective is to avoid them like the plague. But more importantly than that, if you want to ensure you are not scammed by a fake puppy ad, stay away from the full list of sites we have named, shamed and exposed here and stick to the genuine, verified advertisers on pups4sale. You’ll be glad you did. 😉

1)Have you ever owned a pet before?

5)what sex are you interested in taking?
6)How soon do you need the puppies over?
    7)Where are you located?
8)Do your kids love the coming of these puppies?

Sorry for all the question , but i just want to be sure that the puppies are going to the right home and they will be having all the love and attention they need .please get back to me with the answers.
    Waiting for your kind responds.

    Regards.

    My RESPONCE:
Wow thats terrific place to live, my brother is in the Wellington police force there and could arrange “pet tainers” to transport for me, if you can provide the pick up address for him that would work beautifully 🙂

NO MORE emails from them lol

The funny thing is different scam syndicates often use their own, set script within that syndicate, so when you’ve been combating them long enough you get to know which syndicate you’re dealing with. That is if you could be bothered playing with their tiny little criminal minds. We normally just delete them as soon as they try to register on our site…unless we’re feeling particularly malicious that is. 😉

hi I have just been in negotiations with an advertiser of cracker, the grammar in the emails has gotten worse (and surprisingly or not a similar email to the one above, The ad was in the brisbane site but she now she says she is in perth with terrible health issues, can’t talk on the phone, and needs to sell pups quickly because she is going into hospital. Even tho i have asked for registration papers / microchip # etc to be emailed she has just said that they will come with the pup. So my gut instinct which was on edge before is going crazy!!! so i thought i would look up reviews for the site and came across this one which has made me decide not to pursue it. My daughter will be so sad.

Kim, that’s a standard type of “boilerplate” response we often see. The scammer is sitting in a “boiler room” somewhere – most commonly Cameroon or Nigeria – and copying and pasting text into an email to you. Most of the time English is their second language (hence the commonly found spelling and grammatical errors), and they just use the scripts they are told to use.
Anyway, good on you for doing your homework, seeing our various posts on the topic and not getting ripped off by these parasites.
      Keep up the good work!

Thanks for letting me know about this scam, was just looking into puppies myself, sent through three different emails for three different puppies and pretty much got the same response from all three. That’s when I looked to see if they were scamming. Glad I looked!

glad this forum is here. we were about to buy a german shepherd then got the weirdest email requiring payment to some cameroon account. knew immediately it was a scam. so we replied and told them so, got back an email with a ghastly picture of a man being tortured.

Glad to be of service, Mark. What you experienced is a classic scam, although the picture is something new. They occasionally get upset when their scam is foiled, but mostly take it on the chin and move on. For them it is usually just business – however wicked.

They are the best of a bad bunch. The main problem they have is they are actually owned by eBay and thus based in the US, which means if you have a problem, good luck getting customer service in a timely manner.

After 2 emails from a stranger who claims to be giving away puppies. I realised something suspicious. I immediately did some research on google and found this forum, I’m glad it’s here to help us.
    Here is the email:
Thanks for getting back to me with answers to my questions. I want you
to understand my prime concern is not to make money out of the pups but to
find a loving home for the puppies. I just moved due to my new job and
I am currently located in NEW ZEALAND (Wellington). will u be able
to come and collect? as my new job gives me no free opportunities
right now. Or would you rather prefer I arrange a pet delivery service to
deliver the pups to you which will be more faster , safer , cheaper
and convenient for us both. I am re homing them free to any pet loving
home as I think selling them for money shows no love for the puppies.
please do let me know if you will be able to come pick it up here and
if not then let me know so that I can arrange for a home delivery of
the pups and they will be delivered to you right at your
home. you are just going to pay for the delivery charges which will
cost you $350 for one puppy and $550 for both and that is all you are
going to pay for the pups to be deliver to you right at
your home and without any problem because the puppies have all
traveling documents as I have traveled with them without any problem.
please do let me know what you think so that I can let you know how it
works with the home delivery. The puppy will be coming alongside the following

    Health Certificate
    Akc register certificate
    Pedigree
    Vet Record
    Nutritive supplement
    Sleeping sets
    Travel crate
    Toys

hope you don’t mind if i still ask you some few questions?

-Can You Give me a Brief Description about your Environment?
    – Do you have kids ?
-Have you Ever arrange for a home delivery for a pet?
-Are you willing to get the puppy delivered?
-Are you taking both or just one ?

Sorry for all the questions but I just need to know more information
about the kind of home and environment the puppies will be going into.
    thanks for your understanding.

    Sent from my iPhone

It felt weird because I have basically answered these questions in the very first email i sent to him, and 20 mins later he is asking for the same information again.
Hope this helps, I hope that this ‘cracker’ site will be exposed to the public so pet lovers won’t have to suffer from these scammers!

Jackie, this particular scammer is quite typical of the lower level bozos in the scam “food chain”. S/he will speak little if any English, and is working off a script supplied to them. Then, when they get a bite, they pass the victim on to someone higher up the chain with better English and thieving skills.
      That’s basically how it works.
Glad our alerts have proven effective for you, and yes we too wish sites like Cracker would be shut down.

Recently had the same experience on the above website for a pug puppy, Enquired on 4 advertisements and had all the same response to the above.
We played one as advertised in Brisbane but when I emailed them they were in Adelaide when I said I would collect personally. They gave me a name and address of somewhere in Adelaide when we googled the address we said we had a friend that lived in the next suburb over that could go and collect on our behalf suddenly the emails stopped!
They guaranteed if we paid $350 they would deliver the puppy to us in 4-5hours. Well unless they were chartering there own personal lear jet that would not be possible (Adelaide to Sunshine Coast).
Very disheartening when there are people like that out there.

Yes Chelsea, the different scam groups tend to place a number of duplicate ads at the same time in different locations – it’s a common tactic. Glad you were awake to it and congratulations for not getting caught!

Manuella, when you confront them they usually just move on to another potential victim. Sometimes they are bald-faced enough to keep pretending innocence though, to try and keep you on the hook.

K.C., the scammers can (and will!) send you photos of someone else’s puppy or litter, simply by downloading images from the Internet. You MUST assume each and every ad on Cracker is fake, as virtually every ad is. For your own sake, you need to stay right away from such a site, as you are just asking to be ripped off by a scammer.

A classic scam, Terri. Many of the lower down plebs in the chain just use a set of standard scripts, as English is usually their second language. Once they get a bite they pass the potential victim up the chain to a more seasoned scammer who speaks/writes better English. Depressingly sad yet true. :/

Yes, the scammers often use pro-forma emails to contact their intended victims. English is almost invariable their second language, so a lot of the emails they send are either prepared by a third-party contractor, or else their English/grammar is so poor, it gives the game away very quickly. Either way, well done for not getting caught!

Thank you for your vigilance in disclosing this information. My husband and I nearly got scammed by Cracker today as we were trying to purchase two Maltese pups, brother and sister. Their emails were very similar to all those posted here. The last message we received was to transfer money to Oceania Express, located in Queensland (supposedly, but bank account is in Abu Dhabi UAE). I thought this sounded suspicious and googled ‘puppy scams in Australia’ and found your website. Just glad I found this site before we proceeded any further. Thank you!

Hi Melissa, great to hear we have saved you from being scammed. This is the first case we have come across of scammers using an account in the UAE to launder their ill-gotten gains. However the principle remains the same of course; don’t send any money offshore under any circumstances when paying for a pup…oh…and stay away from Cracker too!

I came close – so close to being done by this Michelle Wilson<wilsfamilykennels@gmail.com
This was a Pug called Peaches which was about in 2013 and is about again as of 17 dec 2016 with a lot of other cat and dog ads that they used 2013 from what I can see. If you google Pug Peaches you will see a Herald newspaper where they got $600 from a mother in Newcastle NSW in 2013. I have talked to Police NSW this morning and contacted Allclassifieds who have found at least 8 e-mails for this lot and are busy ridding their site of the devils as they have been alerted. This one claimed to be in Broken Hill but advertised that she was in Canberra. Same responses and enquiries as all of you have described. I Intend to see the AFP about these slime and I am very close to their Headquarters. Apparently they get very active at this time of the year (Christmas) and try to catch decent people out. A real maggot has a place in the scheme of things but these excuses for humans do not. I could not get a phone contact so red flag was flying. They are spongers.

      Hi Kerry,
Glad you didn’t lose any money, but let me educate you even further:
1: The Police are not the slightest bit interested – whatever they may say to your face. They know all such scammers are from overseas, and either pay off their local cops or the cops in their Country just aren’t interested. So make all the reports you like, but they will go precisely nowhere.
2: You say “All classifieds are busy ridding their site of the devils as they have been alerted.” Oh dear. A quick glance at that site shows it is loaded with fake ads of all kinds. The site administrators don’t care – they are just out for a quick buck through Google Adsense. The only reason they would have taken those ads down is to make you fell good and go away. I can guarantee that within a week they will be hosting just as many fake puppy ads as they were before you alerted them to this scam.
You need to realise that the majority of the sites exposed on our “Scams” page couldn’t care less whether you are ripped off or not – all they care about is making money through Google. Just stay away from them, stick to pups4sale sellers and you will be just fine.
      Here endeth the lesson.

Lynne, glad you found us and we were able to save you from being scammed!
The money they get from hosting Google ads is the reason they exist. If Google and other big players such as Yahoo stopped serving ads to these sites, they would cease to exist. However it is a gravy train of ad revenue for all concerned, so that train keeps on chugging…and it is the consumer who ultimately loses. Depressing but true.

Hello my name is Danielle and I am unsure if I am about to be scammed or not.
I am trying to adopt a Pug puppy out of a litter, and the pup is $500… This lady lives in NT and claims her husband and daughter were in a car accident. She apparently has no time to raise the litter of pug puppies because she has to spend a lot of time at the hospital and can’t look after them. The puppy comes with vaccines up to date, she is microchipped, is going to be sent over with accessories, and transported from NT to Melbourne via plane.

This lady has given me her mobile number and has kept in regular contact with me. All she is asking for is a $500 prepaid Woolworths gift card (which will be mailed to her) mainly to arrange freight details. As some form of proof, she took photos and sent me the Woolworths gift card she used to freight a previous puppy to someone else.

Do you think I am being scammed?

    Kindest regards, Danielle

Danielle, we don’t THINK you are being scammed – we KNOW you are being scammed.
The puppy does not exist. You are being worked over by a scam syndicate, running one of the typical type of scams we see every day.
      Our advice to you:
DO NOT have any further contact with the so-called seller whatsoever.
DO NOT give them any further details about yourself than you have already supplied, as they usually try to use those to also build a fake identity to use in additional crimes.
DO NOT go looking for puppies on Cracker, as almost every single one of their ads are fake.
If you want to buy a real Pug puppy from a genuine Australian seller, this is the only page you need to go to: https://www.pups4sale.com.au/dog-breed/475/Pug.html .

I found two poodle pups for sale and have have had correspondence with the seller. Prior to committing I thought I’d do a few checks and found this discussion. Please see below email from seller…….sounds awfully like the scam emails.
    Hello Lydia,
Thanks for your prompt response.. I must say that am very happy to meet a good home for my puppy and I am very convinced that you would take good care of her. Since I have made up our mind to let the baby into to your home, you would have to promise me you would keep me updated of their welfare with monthly pictures so I can know how she is doing. We just relocated in Alice Springs,NT and would have been very happy if you could come for the view. But if its a little far for you, I shall arrange for a pet courier service that would have her delivered to your home address that you will provide to me. They are a very reliable service as I have used them on several occasions with success.. The following details are required.

    Full names…………………
    House address……………..
    City / State…………………..
    post code……………………..
    Home number……………….
    Mobile number……………….
    E-mail address………………
As soon as i have the details , I shall prepare the change of
ownership papers before taking the puppy to the courier company for
registration and delivery . Do get back to me with the details ASAP so i can prepare the change of ownership papers and do the delivery. You will be paying $500 (each) which includes delivery fee for one that is directly to the Courier company.. And also I will send all the relevant paper works
via the Courier service so you will be paying directly to them and not
to me. They will come with Traveling Crate, Pedigree, Registration papers, Health guarantee and a goody bag which will include: A small bag of puppy
food, treats, toys and a blanket with his
mother/litter mates scent. I have attached pics

Regards and waiting for your kind response.

      Hi Lydia,
Remembering that virtually all puppy ads on Cracker are fake, this is just a standard type email we see from the scammers all the time. Of course no puppy exists, and apart from obviously wanting your money, they also want something else. See how they ask for your details? They want those in order to start building a fake ID, which they can of course use for identity crime. Once they had the first batch of details, they then move on to asking for your Driver Licence details and so on – all to build an ID they can then use themselves as well as on-sell to other crims who specialise in fake IDs. Lucky you checked with us first, and saw our blog Post, eh?
By the way, real Poodle puppies can be found here: https://www.pups4sale.com.au/dog-breed/473/Poodle.html 😉
