– Backpage .com.au is this month’s featured site in the Australian Puppy Scams Hall of Shame – and well deserved is it’s membership too!
The sordid history of Backpage is one to behold, with perhaps the most telling of its “honours” being the fact it is the largest host of prostitution related ads in the world. As you can imagine, such a stellar(!) online publication is not one to care about morals, with its driving force of course being the almighty dollar. Originating in the US and now based in Holland, it is a completely MFA (Made For Adsense) site, deriving its revenue from people clicking on the Google ads on its pages.
Like every other MFA site we’ve profiled, the site is unmoderated, meaning puppy scammers are free to ply their trade on the pages within – which they most certainly do. Just like many other MFA sites, Backpage makes a pretense of providing customer care by including an abuse alert email address on each page, where viewers can flag scam ads. Of course all but the uninitiated know that such emails are never attended to (let alone read) by the site administrators, who are too busy trying to ensure as many people as possible click on the Google Adsense ads on their pages.
As we show in the video we’ve made on Backpage, most of the puppy scams are obviously so. Yet the fact the scammers spend a lot of time placing fake ads on the site shows that they must be making some sort of return on their time investment. Unfortunately, as we’ll also show, some legitimate advertisers also use the site. At pups4sale, we suggest it is not a good look for legitimate puppy breeders to be advertising on a site where 99% of the ads are scams, designed to steal money off people. Therefore if you’re thinking about advertisng with the scammers’ friend that is Backpage, we urge you to think again.

Safe net surfing, folks! 😉
